The five-year-old Las Vegas Showgirlz are one of the best female teams in the fastest growing women’s sport – semi professional football.  They are in the recruiting process for the 2011 team.  The team will be playing it’s sixth season this coming spring, and will conduct open tryouts this Fall.  A team meeting is set for Saturday, September 4^th from 1pm to 3pm at Desert Breeze Park Community Center 8275 Spring Mountain Road.  The team has drawn players from U.N.L.V., the Valley’s surrounding city college and high schools, plus other major colleges from around the United States.   The Showgirlz are the first and only female tackle football team in Las Vegas and Nevada.

 

 

            Women playing the sport began in the 1960’s.  Many articles have been written about the Women’s Professional Football League (WPFL) barnstorming tour of 1965 and the National Women’s Football League’s (NWFL) Oklahoma City Dolls of the 1970’s.  Now tackle football for women is growing at a record pace across the country.  Most players are former Division I, II and III athletes who played soccer, basketball, fast pitch softball, track & field, lacrosse, volley and hockey.  Other athletes include local club rugby and flag football players.

The Showgirlz just completed their 2010 campaign in the Women’s Football Alliance (WFA), a national league with fifty teams from all over the country and Mexico, finishing the season at 10-2 and just 2 points away from playing in the National Championship game, losing to the Lone Star Mustangs, the 2010 National champs 6-8 in the Divisional Championship game.  The team will be playing it’s sixth season this coming spring, and will conduct open tryouts this Fall.  A team meeting is set for Saturday, September 4^th from 1pm to 3pm at Desert Breeze Park Community Center 8275 Spring Mountain Road.
