The Short List The traditional definition of the phrase “Short List” is usually associated with a small list of top choices to fill a created position. Or so it was thought. But with this new documentary “The Short List”, Pookey Wigington & Emmanuel Lewis seek to expose the negative weight that people under 5’ 8” carry with them while trying to navigate American society. In a film that works as a series of living portraits, twenty prominent short people of various professions, disciplines and backgrounds offer their own stories and insights on the struggles, triumphs and joys of short life in this country and manage to re-define “The Short List” for a new century in the process. Pookey presents a series of vignettes as a kind of living portraiture in which the subjects address the camera directly as they tell their stories. Those interviewed for the film come from a vast and different collection of disciplines that draw from the worlds of the arts, sports, politics; the group assembled features luminaries such as Gary Coleman, Michael J. Fox, Spud Webb, Danny DiVito and more. Their tales of their lives begin with the personal, and move into an area of larger social repercussion, as the weight of their accomplishments on this country and world come into focus. “The Short List is a passion project for me. I knew going into the project that we would face obstacles and may have to ask taller people to reach certain things for us, but I went for it anyway. What we ended up with was a true piece of art that will hopefully shed some light on how it is to always have to look up to people physically that you may actually look down on figuratively.” In theaters Summer 2014.
