As Clark County School District (CCSD) and USA Sevens Rugby continue their successful partnership with the return of the Adopt-A-Country program in the 2013-2014 school year, the two partners are enhancing the program by incorporating the important lessons of sportsmanship, teamwork, exercise and healthy living into the curriculum through a new and interactive elements that will teach students the actual game of rugby and increase interaction with their adopted countries.
For the first time, CCSD teachers, parents and potential coaches who are participating in the Adopt-A-Country program are invited to receive private training from rugby professionals and earn a “Rookie Rugby” certification during an Adopt-A-Country kickoff event and clinic Saturday, Oct. 19 from 9:30 a.m. to noon at Charlie Frias Park, 4801 South Decatur Blvd., Las Vegas, Nev. 89103.
The rugby clinic, directed by USA Sevens and International Rugby Board Instructor and Educator Vaha Esikia, expands the Adopt-A-Country program by offering adults the opportunity to learn and coach the game of rugby. Throughout the afternoon, participants will learn drills and strategies while interacting with representatives from USA Sevens Rugby, Las Vegas Rugby Association, USA Rugby and Nevada Youth Rugby Organization.
“We continue to think of new ways to expand and grow the Adopt-A-Country program with Clark County School District,” said Rob Cornelius, United World Sports vice president of business development and Adopt-A-Country coordinator. “Over the past few years the CCSD students have really embraced the cultures of their adopted nations bringing an amazing energy to this program, and we wanted to grow that enthusiasm and extend the program to educators and coaches.”
USA Sevens Rugby will also work with CCSD to incorporate new interactive elements into the program in an effort to increase student interaction with their adopted countries. Through the use of online technology, program organizers will create opportunities for the students to interact with their adopted country and its rugby sevens team to create a more personal relationship and beneficial learning experience for the students.
The Adopt-A-Country program matches participating Clark County schools with a nation competing in the 2014 USA Sevens International Rugby Tournament, Jan. 24 – 26, at the Sam Boyd Stadium. Each of the schools will implement a curriculum into the classroom to educate its students on international cultures, traditions, customs and languages. Leading up to the tournament, students will interact with the school’s adopted nation through various lesson plans, including art, geography, history and physical education. Students will also meet players from their adopted country’s rugby sevens team during onsite pep-rallies the week of the USA Sevens event and participate in youth rugby clinics directed by certified USA Rugby instructors.
“The Adopt-A-Country program has offered remarkable opportunities for the Clark County School District and students that otherwise would not be imaginable,” said Judy Myers with the CCSD-Clark County School District School-Community Partnership Program. “This program shows the dedication USA Sevens has for our local community while also inspiring our students and teachers through hands-on learning experiences with international cultures.”
In addition to the classroom activities, students will have the chance to participate in a T-shirt contest and critical thinking essay competition as a part of the program. The T-shirt contest encourages students to design a shirt that captures the essence and culture of the school’s respective nation. Each school will select one T-shirt design to represent the entire student body against the 15 other participating schools. An overall winner of the T-shirt contest will be selected by a panel of judges.
For the essay contest, students are asked to compare and contrast their typical day with a typical day in their adopted country. The essay winner from each school will represent their adopted nation and class in the 2014 USA Sevens Parade of Nations Ceremony on the Fremont Street Experience, which will be held Thursday, Jan. 23.
