Niners offensive lineman Al Netter, who spent his rookie season on the practice squad in 2012, was arrested for driving under the influence Wednesday in San Jose, the Santa Rosa Press Democrat reported.

Netter, 23, who attended Cardinal Newman High School in Santa Rosa, is the third 49ers player to be arrested for DUI in the past 13 months.

Through a spokesman, the team issued a statement: “The 49ers are aware of the recent matter involving Al Netter. We take these issues very seriously, but will reserve comment at this time as this is an ongoing legal matter. The organization will continue to gather the facts and monitor the developments closely.”

A four-year starter at Northwestern, Netter turned down an opportunity to join the 53-man roster of another NFC team this past season, believing he has a bright future in San Francisco. Before the Super Bowl, he said he would have been promoted to the Niners’ active roster if an offensive lineman had been sidelined. The 49ers were one of three teams to use the same starting five offensive linemen in every regular-season game in 2012.

“It came down to making a decision for the long run, instead of making a decision based on the immediate future,” Netter said.

Netter signed a reserve/future contract earlier this month, meaning he will be on the roster when the league year begins March 12.

In January of 2012, 49ers outside linebacker Aldon Smith was arrested for DUI in Miami Beach. Reserve defensive lineman Demarcus Dobbs was arrested for DUI and marijuana possession in Santa Clara in November.
